We Brought 3v3 Soccer to Saskatoon - Here's What Happened

Grassroots Soccer Academy | Youth Soccer Development | Saskatoon, Saskatchewan

On July 5th, 2025, Grassroots Soccer Academy set up four brand-new AirPitch courts at a local Saskatoon field and invited players from Lakewood Soccer Club to come out and try something different. It was our first official 3v3 event, our equipment had arrived just days earlier, and honestly, we weren't sure what to expect.

What we got was one of the most exciting days we've had as a soccer academy.

The Setup

We'd just received our official equipment through 3v3 Canada, and we were eager to put it to the test. The AirPitch courts inflate in about 6-8 minutes each, so getting four courts ready didn't take long. With a dozen kids ranging in age and skill level arriving on a perfect overcast Saskatchewan morning, the energy was already building before the first whistle.

For those unfamiliar with the format: 3v3 soccer is played on a compact 15x10m pitch with inflatable boundaries, no goalkeeper, and teams of three. The ball stays in play 83% of the time - compared to about 60% in traditional soccer - which means nearly constant action. Every player is involved. Every single minute.

If you want the full breakdown of why 3v3 is so effective for player development, check out our deep-dive post on the benefits of 3v3 soccer here.

What We Saw on the Field

The transformation in players was immediate, and that's not an exaggeration.

Kids who tend to stay on the periphery in regular 11v11 games were suddenly in the middle of every play - because in 3v3, there's nowhere else to go. One quiet girl who rarely called for the ball in practice was directing teammates and demanding passes within the first few minutes of her first game. Another player who'd been struggling with confidence in traditional formats was attempting step-overs and quick one-twos like he'd been playing small-sided for years.

One moment that captured the whole day: a dad who played college soccer jumped in for a parents-versus-kids match. His 10-year-old daughter ran circles around him. He was laughing, shaking his head, and slightly out of breath. She was loving every second.

Our coaches were taking mental notes the entire time. The skill development that typically takes weeks or months of drilling was happening organically, driven entirely by the format itself. The small space and constant pressure force kids to make faster decisions, use both feet, and get creative - there's simply no room to play it safe.

Why This Format Works for Saskatchewan Families

One of our goals at Grassroots Soccer Academy is to make quality soccer development accessible to players of all ages and skill levels in Saskatchewan. The 3v3 format fits that mission perfectly.

Advanced players can't dominate the game the way they might on a full-size pitch - the space forces them to rely on teammates constantly. Developing players get more touches in one 8-minute game than they might in several traditional matches. And mixed-ability groups? They work brilliantly together in this format, because skill and creativity matter more than size and speed.

By the end of the day, every kid was asking when we could do it again. Several parents asked about organizing neighbourhood leagues. A few inquired about purchasing their own equipment.

That kind of response tells you everything.

What's Next

This event confirmed what we already believed: 3v3 soccer belongs in Saskatchewan’s youth development landscape, and we're committed to growing it. We're planning upcoming events, tournaments, and league opportunities through Grassroots Soccer Academy - including our Northern Lights 3v3 Soccer Fest, details coming soon.

If you're interested in getting your child involved, or if you're a club or organization looking to add 3v3 programming, we'd love to connect.
